STEM Entrepreneurship Incubator

TURNING IDEAS & DREAMS INTO IMPACTFUL SOLUTIONS
About the Project

STEM Entrepreneurship Incubator

The STEM Entrepreneurship Incubator is a transformative program designed to empower youth from under-resourced communities to turn their innovative ideas into viable startups. By combining STEM education with entrepreneurial training, the incubator bridges the gap between technical expertise and business acumen. Through this program, participants learn how to identify real-world problems, create innovative solutions, and bring those solutions to life. From the initial concept to building a prototype, and eventually launching a business, the incubator provides the tools and support to help youth become change-makers and entrepreneurs in STEM.

The Problem We're Solving

South Africa has no shortage of young talent. However, what it lacks is infrastructure that connects that talent to real opportunity. According to Statistics South Africa, youth unemployment exceeds 45%. Furthermore, this gap hits hardest in township and rural communities — where young people have ideas and energy, but no clear pathway forward.

Most entrepreneurship support in South Africa is built for urban, already-resourced founders. As a result, township youth are consistently left out of the innovation economy. STEM Ignited's Entrepreneurship Incubator exists to change that.

What the Incubator Does

The Incubator is a structured programme. It takes participants from idea, to prototype, to pitch. In addition, it combines technical STEM skills with practical business training — so young people don't just learn, they build.

Participants move through three core phases:

  • Discover: First, participants identify real problems in their communities. They learn design thinking frameworks used by innovators worldwide.
  • Build: Next, they develop solutions using STEM tools — from coding and electronics to data analysis. Experienced mentors support them throughout.
  • Launch: Finally, participants shape their solution into a viable business concept. They build a prototype and present to industry professionals and potential supporters.

The Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA) recognises that early entrepreneurship exposure drives long-term economic inclusion. Moreover, our Incubator delivers this specifically for young people who have historically been excluded from those opportunities.

Who This Programme Is For

This programme is designed for three groups of young people:

  • Future entrepreneurs from township and rural communities. They have ideas, but need structure, mentorship, and tools to move forward.
  • STEM students and graduates who want to combine technical skills with business knowledge. In short, people who want to build something of their own.
  • Young problem-solvers who see challenges in their communities. Instead of waiting for someone else to fix them, they want to build the solution themselves.

We actively work to ensure gender equity in every cohort. Research from the National Youth Development Agency shows that young women are underrepresented in both STEM and entrepreneurship pipelines. Therefore, we target a minimum of 50% female participation as a programme standard.

Partner or Sponsor This Programme

There are several ways to get involved. Corporate partners and foundations can sponsor cohorts, provide mentors, offer workspace, or fund participant stipends. As a result, every contribution directly expands how many young people move from idea to impact.
