STEM Education in South Africa: The Gap We're Closing

South Africa faces a critical STEM skills shortage. However, the pipeline problem starts long before university — it begins in Grades 8 and 9, when learners in township and rural schools make subject choices without ever having met a scientist, engineer, or technologist.

According to Statistics South Africa, youth unemployment exceeds 45%. Furthermore, research consistently shows that learners who receive early STEM career exposure are significantly more likely to pursue Mathematics and Science subjects — and the careers that follow.

The Department of Higher Education and Training has identified STEM skills as a national priority for South Africa's economic development. Yet for most learners in under-resourced communities, access to quality STEM exposure remains out of reach.

STEM Ignited exists to close that gap. We operate at the intersection of education, career development, and entrepreneurship — bringing real STEM environments, professionals, and opportunities directly to young people in townships and rural communities across South Africa.

Our Approach

We don't run once-off events. Instead, we build structured pathways — from career immersion days at facilities like SANSA's Space Operations Centre, to entrepreneurship incubation, to scholarship support. Each programme is designed to meet learners at a critical decision point and give them what they need to choose STEM with confidence.

Our bold goal: develop 1 million STEM professionals and entrepreneurs from underserved South African communities by 2033.

If you are a school, corporate partner, funder, or volunteer — there is a role for you in this mission.

Educational Programs

Our educational programs are designed to engage students in STEM fields through project-based learning and mentorship. These programs may include activities such as building robots, programming, or developing scientific experiments.

Career Popup Days

STEM Ignited's career pop-up events provide students with the opportunity to connect with professionals in various STEM fields. These events may include panels, Q&A sessions, and networking opportunities. The goal is to expose students to a range of STEM career paths and help them build the connections they need to succeed in these fields.

Workshops

STEM Ignited's workshops are hands-on learning experiences designed to introduce students to a variety of STEM topics. These workshops are typically led by professionals in STEM fields, and provide students with an opportunity to engage with the material through activities, experiments, and other interactive experiences.

Real World Learning

STEM Ignited is committed to empowering young Africans with practical STEM skills and real-world experience. Through hands-on learning, internships, and mentorship, we aim to ignite a passion for innovation and problem-solving. Our goal is to create a pipeline of talented STEM professionals who can drive Africa's development and build a sustainable future for all.
