STEM Education in South Africa: The Gap We're Closing
South Africa faces a critical STEM skills shortage. However, the pipeline problem starts long before university — it begins in Grades 8 and 9, when learners in township and rural schools make subject choices without ever having met a scientist, engineer, or technologist.
According to Statistics South Africa, youth unemployment exceeds 45%. Furthermore, research consistently shows that learners who receive early STEM career exposure are significantly more likely to pursue Mathematics and Science subjects — and the careers that follow.
The Department of Higher Education and Training has identified STEM skills as a national priority for South Africa's economic development. Yet for most learners in under-resourced communities, access to quality STEM exposure remains out of reach.
STEM Ignited exists to close that gap. We operate at the intersection of education, career development, and entrepreneurship — bringing real STEM environments, professionals, and opportunities directly to young people in townships and rural communities across South Africa.
Our Approach
We don't run once-off events. Instead, we build structured pathways — from career immersion days at facilities like SANSA's Space Operations Centre, to entrepreneurship incubation, to scholarship support. Each programme is designed to meet learners at a critical decision point and give them what they need to choose STEM with confidence.
Our bold goal: develop 1 million STEM professionals and entrepreneurs from underserved South African communities by 2033.
